GFM`s mapping at Benaki Museum exhibition: Africa amongst us*
Read below about the timeline of the Afro-diaspora in Greece, presented by the Greek Forum of Migrants as part of the Benaki Museum exhibition "Africa Among Us*":
The Benaki Museum exhibition "Africa Among Us"* at Pireos 138 will run until May 25, 2025.
The Greek Forum of Migrants is participating in the exhibition by documenting and shaping a timeline that captures aspects of the African presence in Greece from the 1960s onward. The archive displayed in the exhibition`s timeline—comprising photographs, letters, magazines, newspaper clippings, and more—has been temporarily and voluntarily provided to the Benaki Museum by the Greek Forum of Migrants. This collection is part of the existing mapping project**—a timeline of migrant and refugee communities created by the Greek Forum of Migrants.
This project, initiated by the Greek Forum of Migrants in 2017, focuses on creating an archive of migrant activism and the presence of various migrant communities in Greece from the 1960s to today. The project is ongoing, with new claims and actions being added daily.
More About the TIMELINE of the Exhibition AFRICA AMONG US:
The timeline on display at the Benaki Museum is a first attempt to document the presence of the Afro-diaspora in Greece from the 1960s to the present.
In dialogue with key events in Greek and global history of the period, the timeline highlights aspects of African activity in Greece, the collective struggles of migrants and refugees living in the country, and the public presence and active participation of Afro-diasporic individuals and their children, who were born and raised in Greece, in society and culture.
The timeline was designed in collaboration with the Greek Forum of Migrants (GFM), with material drawn from the archives of the GFM, the archive of the Sudanese Community, and the personal archive of Samsideen Iddrisu.
This is also a work in progress, and therefore, we consider it crucial for everyone to contribute by suggesting events or moments that deserve to be documented and included in the history of the African diaspora in Greece.
