Help make Migrants voice heard in Greece
Imagine arriving in a new country, full of hope for a better tomorrow -yet being invisible to the state. Imagine not speaking the language, trying to find a house, a job, or working and paying taxes and fees, but without equal rights, or access to services. Waiting years for a residence permit, facing labor exploitation, lacking access to basic social services, and having no real prospects for integration.
This is the reality for hundreds of thousands of people in Greece -migrants who have lived in the country for decades. All this while most citizens desire an inclusive, democratic, and fair society.
The Greek Forum of Migrants is not just an organization. It was founded by migrants, for migrants. Since 2002, it has operated as an association and is the largest network of migrant organizations and communities in Greece (44 member communities from the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia). Its actions aim at a society where every person who chooses to live in Greece has equal rights, a voice, and real opportunities for integration.
Today, the situation for migrant communities in Greece is critical:
- Migration is criminalized : policies increasingly exclude migrants instead of promoting integration and inclusion. Even acquiring Greek citizenship for people born in the country is becoming more difficult.
- Racist violence and hate speech are on the rise , with no effective state plan to combat them.
- Severe delays in issuing and renewing residence permits , leaving thousands in precarious situations.
- Widespread labor violations : undeclared work, non-payment of allowances, denial of sick leave, unpaid overtime.
- Contrary to European directives and European law, Greece does not treat migrants equally and lawfully, as it should treat all citizens.
Why your support is essential now:
The challenges are enormous, but the need for the Greek Forum of Migrants - GFM is undeniable. With your help, we can continue offering:
- Operation of the GFM InfoDesk : every day we receive dozens of requests from migrants or Greek doctors/social workers across the country about legal, medical, and other issues.
- Empowerment workshops for migrant women, LGBTQI individuals, and survivors of gender-based violence.
- Information for GFM communities : educational seminars, info sessions, and meetings on issues that concern us.
- Advocacy actions on International Migrants Day and the International Day Against Racism, where our voices can be heard.
- Cultural and sports events promoting social cohesion and inclusion (migrant community festivals, “Kypseli Mundial,” etc.).
Our goal: to raise €3,000 to immediately support these vital actions.
