WORLD DAY AGAINST RACISM

We all say NO TO RACISM!

On the World Day against Racism (International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination), on Tuesday, 21st of March, the Greek Forum of Migrants, for the 9th year, is calling all groups that are currently being discriminated and affected by racism to raise their voices and to declare their determination to fight all kind of racism and humiliation of human dignity.

We unite our voices, more than 100 Civil Society’s Organizations, communities, bodies, NGOs and representatives from wider groups affected by discrimination and racism (PWD, LGBTQI, Roma, migrants, refugees, HIV positive, elderly, drug addicts, people with mental illness, prisoners, religious minorities, etc.) but also along with human rights defenders that are being attacked for their work and action.

Together, united, we will gather at Syntagma sq. in Athens where we will protest and perform, as every year, the Award Ceremony of Antiracism - Tzanetos Antypas trophy to an organization or a person for their contribution in  anti-racism and human rights. 

• Meeting point, on Tuesday 21st of March 2023, at 16:30, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma sq. / station, where the ceremony award will take place:

Every year, the end of the action of the "Walk against discrimination" is marked by the award ceremony of Antiracism - Tzanetos Antypas trophy to an organization or a person for their contribution in anti-racism and human rights. This year we will NOT walk, we will stand still at the rally point in protest of the stagnation of human rights in the country. We remain still, but standing, holding aloft the baton of human rights, however tested. The awarding of the trophy will take place immediately after the protest.

This year, the Organizing Committee of the WAD2023 decided to give the trophy to the Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM), that completes 30 years of action in favor of human rights in all areas (ethnic and religious minorities, Roma, LGBTI+, disabled, migrants and refugees, freedom of expression, fair trial, racist crimes, fight against extremism, gender equality, children`s rights, police brutality, human rights defenders). GHM’s action focuses on references and reports to the UN, the Council of Europe and the EU, along with complaints and appeals to Greek and International justice, which has subsequently led to the issuing of hundreds of convictions or criminal prosecutions.

But 2022 ended with the prosecution of many human rights defenders, including the GHM representative, Panagiotis Dimitras. The restrictive measures imposed on him have been denounced by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteurs on Human Rights Defenders and the Human Rights of Migrants (and many Greek and international NGOs) as a violation of international and European law of human rights and asylum, while they constitute an abuse of Greek laws, with the aim of punishing their action as defenders of human rights.

 * The trophy was established in 2017 in the memory of the activist and founder of  PRAKSIS organization, Tzanetos Antypas, where each year an organization or a person working on issues of anti-racism and human rights is awarded.
